If you fly out of Batumi, you do not need to drive back to Tbilisi at the end. The car can be taken in one large city and returned in another, and the Tbilisi → Batumi direction is usually free; if not, the amount is named when you book. Put the return city in your request. That turns the trip into a line from east to west instead of a loop, and saves a day on the road back.

If you are staying in the old town, ask the hotel about parking in advance, as the streets there are narrow and steep. If you head straight for the mountains, fill up while still in the city.
