Car rental in Tbilisi

Drivers must be 21+ with at least 1 year of experience; any country’s license is accepted, original required, no IDP needed, and a second driver is free if they meet the same criteria. No deposit on most cars; premium-class cars require a $100 deposit, refunded at return. Full CASCO has no deductible if your experience is 2+ years; with less than 2 years a deductible applies and depends on the car, and insurance is void if driving under the influence. Minimum rental period is 1 day.

One-way car rental Tbilisi → Batumi is usually free to return. Batumi → Tbilisi may have a commission; the exact amount is confirmed at booking. You can also pick up in one major city and drop in another on request.

Easy day trips: Mtskheta, the wineries of Kakheti, and north to Gudauri and Kazbegi along the Georgian Military Road. Mountain routes are allowed, but premium cars and low sedans are not suitable. Gravel is permitted, yet tires and underbody are never covered by insurance; winter tires are fitted from November.

The centre is dense and many streets are narrow, so allow extra time for traffic. Paid parking works on two layers: a citywide municipal subscription — around 4 GEL a week, 25 GEL for six months, 50 GEL a year — and hourly zones on the busiest streets, 1 GEL an hour after the first 15 minutes free. You can pay on bogpay.ge, at the orange and blue street terminals, or in the Parking Tbilisi app; the app sometimes refuses foreign documents at registration, so the website is the safer option for visitors. A parking fine is 50 GEL, towing costs 150 GEL plus storage. Traffic is heaviest in the morning and late afternoon, and the Old Town streets are narrow — it is usually easier to park nearby and walk.
