Your driving licence for car rental in Georgia can come from any country, as long as you bring the original card. Together with your passport, it is the only document we ask for. Your years of driving experience matter too: they decide whether the insurance comes with an excess or without one.

Which driving licence for car rental in Georgia we accept

We accept a licence issued in any country, whatever your nationality, and a Georgian licence on the same terms. What matters is the original card: a copy, a scan or a photo on your phone will not do. Check the expiry date against your rental dates before you fly, and pack the card in the same wallet as your passport so the two travel together.

Age and driving experience

The minimum age is 21, and you need at least one year behind the wheel. A second driver is added free of charge if they meet the same age and experience rules.

On long routes, such as Batumi to Tbilisi or a day in the mountains, two drivers make the trip much less tiring. Mention the second driver in the request, with their age and years of experience, and bring their passport and original licence to the handover.

Under two years of experience: the excess

Full comprehensive cover is included in the price, and with two years of experience or more it comes with no excess. With less than two years there is an excess: its amount depends on the car, and we tell you the figure when you book, so ask about two or three models and compare. A driver who is 21 with one year behind the wheel meets both rental rules, but the excess applies.

Whatever your experience, the insurance does not cover tyres or the underbody on any road, and you pay for their repair, so take rough stretches slowly.

If you have little driving experience

Start with the easier roads, the coast around Batumi and the main highways, and leave the mountain passes for later:

• Cities — traffic in Batumi and Tbilisi is dense, and drivers change lanes more boldly than many visitors expect, so keep a longer distance.
• Rural roads — cows and slow tractors appear around bends, especially in the evening.
• Mountain roads — allow more time than your GPS says.
• Darkness — drive an unfamiliar mountain road for the first time in daylight.

A good first drive is the coast road from Batumi to Kobuleti or to Gonio: the road is easy and the views are worth it.

Which car suits a new driver

The class of car does not change the licence rules, but it changes how easy the first days feel. For the city and the coast, a compact car is enough and simpler to park on narrow streets. Mountain roads are allowed on all our cars except premium models and low sedans; for gravel roads to villages and canyons, look at the SUV section, where the 4x4 models are marked in the name. Winter tyres are fitted from November, but on a snowy pass a new driver is better off waiting for a clear day.

At the handover and on the road

The handover takes 10–15 minutes: we check your passport and licence, then go round the car with you and film its condition. If you collect the car at an airport, keep both documents in your hand luggage, not in the checked suitcase. After that, keep the licence with you whenever you drive, not in the hotel safe. If you swap drivers during the day, the person at the wheel needs their own licence on them.
