Batumi Airport: Transfers, Car Rental and Tips

Batumi airport is small and sits right on the edge of the city, so the trip into the centre is short. What matters on arrival is how you get there, where to change money and buy a SIM card, and whether a car is already waiting for you.

Batumi airport: first steps after landing

• Money — there are exchange desks in the airport, but the rate there is rarely the best; change just enough for coffee and the ride, and the rest in town.
• SIM card — the choice of tariffs is wider in the city centre, so a local SIM can wait until you are in town.
• Wi-Fi — do not rely on it; download an offline map of Batumi before you fly.
• Luggage — the airport is compact, so from the belt to the exit takes only a few minutes.

Keep your passport and driving licence at hand if a rental car is waiting: the handover starts with them.

How to get from the airport to the city

• Taxi through an app — ride-hailing apps work in Batumi, and the price is shown before you order.
• Taxi drivers in the arrivals hall — agree the price before you get in; an app is often cheaper.
• Buses and minibuses — inexpensive, but awkward with suitcases and less frequent in the evening.
• A rental car — waiting in the airport car park, if you booked delivery.

For a short stay in the centre, with the boulevard and the beach within walking distance, a taxi is usually enough. If you plan to see Adjara, a car from the first hour means you won't need a taxi from the airport or later.

Car rental at the airport

At DRACARS delivery to the airport is free, and we meet you in the airport car park. The handover takes 10–15 minutes: we walk around the car with you and film its condition on video, so there is a record for both sides.

Requests are confirmed within 15–20 minutes between 9:00 and midnight, and there is no prepayment. Send the request before your flight, so the confirmation is waiting when you board.

Airport or hotel: where to take the car

Delivery to a hotel in Batumi is free as well, so the choice depends only on your plans. If you leave the city straight away, for the mountains or the coast, take the car at the airport.

If the first days are on the beach, take a taxi to the hotel and ask for the car there on the day you set off. That way you do not pay for days when the car stands outside the hotel. In the request, give the hotel name and the day you set off.

Where to go on the first day

The airport lies on the southern edge of the city, so the first trips can start straight from the car park:

• Gonio Fortress and Sarpi — a Roman fortress and pebble beaches further south along the coast, up to the Turkish border.
• The Batumi boulevard — the seafront promenade, best in the evening when the heat eases.
• Makhuntseti waterfall and Queen Tamar Bridge — in the Adjara mountains, an easy half-day.
• The Botanical Garden — on the coast north of the city, with sea views and bamboo groves.
• Kobuleti — calmer, wide beaches further north.

If you land in the afternoon, Gonio and a walk on the boulevard fit into the first evening without any rush. For mountain roads, all our cars are allowed except premium models and low sedans; the insurance does not cover tyres or the underbody on any road, and their repair is paid by the renter.

Before your flight home

Agree in advance where and when you will hand the car back, in the same chat where the booking was confirmed. Leave enough time before your flight for the drive and the handover.

Before you hand over the keys, check the boot, the glovebox and the door pockets for chargers, sunglasses and documents. Things left in a rental car are usually remembered only after take-off, when getting them back is much harder.
