Add a drive back to wherever you started, and the kilometres nearly double.

How a mileage cap works, where there is one

A cap can be a daily or a per-rental allowance of kilometres, with a charge for every kilometre beyond it. A daily cap is the harsher kind: a single long transfer can use it up even if the rest of the week is short hops around town. A cap can also differ by car class, so the same route may cost differently in a sedan and in an SUV.

The charge per kilometre looks small, but it adds up over a few hundred kilometres and arrives on the last day, at the handover.

What to check in the terms

• One-way trips — whether they have their own limit.
