Batumi Weather by Season: When to Go

Batumi weather by season works like this: summer is for the sea, spring and autumn are for the mountains and sightseeing, and winter is for a quiet city with ski slopes within reach. The climate is subtropical, with mild winters, hot and humid summers and rain possible in any month.

The figures are daytime averages, and single days can be warmer or cooler. Nights by the sea are noticeably fresher, and the mountains are colder still. For swimming, go by the water: it is comfortable roughly from June to early October.

Summer: the sea and the heat

Summer is the peak season: the water is warm, the city stays up late, and every café on the boulevard and in the old town is open. Humidity is high, so the heat feels heavier than in a dry climate, and evenings bring little relief.

July and August mean the busiest beaches and the hardest parking in the centre. If you have a choice, the second half of June and the first half of September give almost the same sea with far fewer people. Summer rain happens too, but it is usually short.

Autumn: the sea without the heat

Many call September the best month: the sea is still warm, the heat has eased and there are noticeably fewer visitors. In October it is cool for swimming, but it is a good time for trips around Adjara, with clear air, quieter roads and golden autumn in the mountains. September and October are also the time of rtveli, the grape harvest.

Autumn is the rainiest time of year in Batumi, which matters if mountain roads are in your plans. The days are shorter, so set off earlier to be back in daylight.

Spring: green hills and waterfalls

Spring is the best time for those who are not coming for the sea. Everything is in bloom, the weather suits long walks and there are still few visitors. Bring a light jacket, since spring weather changes quickly.

In May you can already swim, but the sea is cool. The mountain routes open up, and the waterfalls are at their fullest after the snowmelt: Makhuntseti in spring looks nothing like it does in August.

Winter: a quiet city and the mountains

Snow rarely falls in Batumi itself, but there is plenty of rain. The city empties, the boulevard is yours, and there is no need to hunt for a free table in a café. There is also more choice of places to stay than in high season.

The big winter advantage is the mountains nearby: Goderdzi in Adjara, and further away Bakuriani and Gudauri. In winter the road matters more than the weather, though: passes are sometimes closed after snowfall, so check the road on the morning you set off.

What to know if you rent a car

• Winter tyres — fitted from November and included in the price.
• Mountains — allowed on all our cars except premium models and low sedans.
• Tyres and the underbody — not covered by the insurance on any road, so drive slowly on wet gravel and in snow.
• Parking in summer — spaces near the boulevard are scarce, so allow time or park further from the centre.
• Rain on hairpin roads — visibility drops and the asphalt gets slippery, so allow more time than the navigation app suggests.

Delivery to a hotel in Batumi is free, so you can take the car only for the days out and do without it on rainy days in town. If the forecast promises a long spell of rain, move a mountain trip to another day.
