Renting a car in Georgia: documents, deposit and insurance
What to bring, how much it costs, which licences work in Georgia and what to check in the contract.
Renting a car is the easiest way to see Georgia: distances are short, while reaching Kazbegi, Svaneti or the Kakheti wine region by public transport takes a whole day.
Documents you need
Your passport and driving licence. A licence from any country is valid in Georgia for one year from your date of entry, and no international permit is required. Minimum age is 21 with two years of driving experience.
Is a deposit required
We do not take a deposit. The only exception is driving abroad with a Georgian residence permit — see below.
What the insurance covers
Full insurance with no excess is included in the price for drivers with two or more years of experience. With less experience an excess applies — the amount depends on the car. Tyres and the underbody are not covered anywhere, including mountain and gravel roads.
What affects the price
- The longer the rental, the cheaper the day. A week costs noticeably less per day than two days.
- Delivery in Batumi, including the airport, is free; to Tbilisi and Kutaisi airports it costs ₾50.
- Mileage is unlimited within Georgia.
Crossing the border
Driving abroad is possible only with a Georgian residence permit. A deposit is required and the service is paid separately; the price depends on the rental period. Tell the manager in advance.
