Renting a car in Georgia: documents, deposit and insurance

What to bring, how much it costs, which licences work in Georgia and what to check in the contract.

Renting a car is the easiest way to see Georgia: distances are short, while reaching Kazbegi, Svaneti or the Kakheti wine region by public transport takes a whole day.

Documents you need

Your passport and driving licence. A licence from any country is valid in Georgia for one year from your date of entry, and no international permit is required. Minimum age is 21 with two years of driving experience.

Is a deposit required

Most economy and comfort cars require no deposit. For premium models the deposit is shown on the car page and is returned when you hand the car back undamaged.

What the insurance covers

Basic insurance is included in the price. Full coverage with no excess is optional and costs about ten dollars a day — worth it if you plan mountain roads and gravel tracks.

What affects the price

  • The longer the rental, the cheaper the day. A week costs noticeably less per day than two days.
  • Delivery to Batumi, Tbilisi and Kutaisi airports is free.
  • Mileage is unlimited within Georgia.

Crossing the border

You can drive to Armenia and Azerbaijan with a power of attorney and additional insurance. Tell the manager in advance — the paperwork takes a day.
