Best time to visit Georgia: seasons and roads
Best time to visit Georgia for a road trip: weather by region, seasonal road tips, mountain-pass advice and rental notes for Batumi.

The best time to visit Georgia by car is spring and autumn: roads are open, visibility is good and the heat is mild. Summer suits the Black Sea coast and high mountain routes, and winter suits ski resorts if you plan the mountain legs with care.
Seasons: what to expect on the road
- Spring (March–May). Rivers run high after rain and showers are common. Pack layers and keep a spare day in the plan.
- Summer (June–August). Good for the coast and for high-altitude routes. Start early on popular roads and book mountain stays in advance.
- Autumn (September–November). Dry air and the grape harvest in Kakheti. Days are stable, evenings get cool at altitude.
- Winter (December–February). Snowfall can slow the ski roads to Gudauri and Bakuriani. After storms some high passes close for a short time, so keep your timing flexible.
Regions differ: coast, mountains, wine country
- Black Sea coast (Batumi). Summer is beach weather, and rain can come in any month. Roads are mostly flat; watch for slick sections after sudden showers.
- Kazbegi and Gudauri. Best from late spring to early autumn. Expect hairpins, tunnels and occasional fog, with wind on the ridges.
- Svaneti (Mestia, Ushguli). Summer and early autumn have the clearest skies and open roads. In the shoulder months dusk comes earlier and mornings are cooler.
- Kakheti (Telavi, Sighnaghi). Spring bloom and autumn harvest; gentle drives among vineyards over low passes.
- Imereti (Kutaisi, Prometheus, Martvili). Spring and autumn suit canyon walks and cave visits. Summer can be humid.
Month-by-month road ideas
- April–May. Combine Batumi with the Kutaisi canyons and the Kakheti bloom; add Kazbegi in late May, when the roads are clearer.
- June–July. Mix the coast with Svaneti after the snowmelt, and book Mestia stays early.
- August. Base yourself in the mountains (Gudauri, Bakuriani), where it is cooler than in the valleys, and make day trips down.
- September–October. Pair the Kakheti harvest with Svaneti or the Kazbegi area.
- November. Stay low and mild: Batumi coast, Kutaisi caves and the Borjomi–Bakuriani forests.
Mountain and gravel roads
- Mountain travel is allowed in any of our cars except premium vehicles and low sedans, so choose a car with enough clearance.
- Gravel is allowed, but tires and the underbody are not covered by insurance, so repairs are on the renter. Keep speeds modest, steer around rocks and skip unmaintained shortcuts after rain.
- Winter tires are fitted from November. Even so, leave extra distance and brake early on bridges and in tunnels.
- Drive mountain sections in daylight and watch for fog near ridges. After heavy snow or rain, check pass status locally before you go.
Timing and crowds
Summer weekends are busiest on the Batumi coast, so start early or travel midweek. Ski weekends pack the main climb to Gudauri; start your descent before dusk. Harvest time draws visitors to Kakheti, so book tastings and overnights ahead.
There is no mileage limit, which makes it easy to link coast, vineyards and mountains in one loop. If you start on the coast, a Batumi car rental is the simplest way in, and hotel delivery in Batumi is free.
What to pack by season
- Summer. Sunshade, plenty of water and a light long-sleeve shirt.
- Spring and autumn. A rain shell and quick-dry shoes.
- Winter. Warm layers, gloves, an ice scraper and a cloth against fogged windows.
- All year. Offline maps, a headlamp and a small first-aid kit.
In short
Spring and autumn balance clear skies, open roads and mild temperatures; summer is for beaches and alpine cool; winter works with flexible timing. For mountain days choose a car with enough clearance. Book your car in Batumi.
